These shrubs are members of the pea and bean family. There are both deciduous and evergreen species.

Cytisus usually have slender green branches and few mid-green 3 palmate leaves. Sometimes mature specimens are totally leafless. Cytisus are primarily grown for their many pea-like flowers that usually bloom in late spring and summer. Yellows and golds are the most common flower colours available but double coloured flowers such as those displayed by Cytisus ‘Goldfinch’ are also available. Downy seed pods follow the flowers.

Usual size is approx. 1.5m x 1.5 m but the variety of these shrubs ranges from low growing shrubs to small trees.
